Permit bucks trend

Councillors allow subdivision in rural zone, going against recommendation

Written by CLARE QUIRK .

ALPINE Shire council has gone against a recommendation by planning manager Heather Green and given approval to a two-lot subdivision in the Buckland Valley.

Deputy mayor Daryl Pearce said the land had been in local resident Jan McCormack’s family for over 100 years and the approval would allow the family to continue to work and live in the area.

"This has been ongoing for two years," he said.

"The rural conservation zones are very restrictive for families.

"This land has been in the family since 1904.

"We shouldn’t try to stop mature, young educated people returning home.

"These are people who will put a lot back into the community."

Cr Pearce said too many rural blocks are farming zoned and this needs to be reviewed.

Cr Jan Vonarx echoed Cr Pearce and said she was adamant that the permit should be approved.

"My personal belief is that some policy is too restrictive.

"This subdivision isn’t harming any of the cultural aspects of the area.

"The one size fits all approach doesn’t work."
