MYRTLEFORD’S under 16 side will need to produce a strong batting performance this weekend if it is to defeat Rovers United.
Rovers won the toss on their home ground, electing to bat first, and put together a more than competitive total despite being undermanned.
While opening pair Reuben Jamieson (1/9 off five overs) and Elijah Wales (1/7 off six overs) bowled a tight line and kept the run rate low, Rovers soon began to find their rhythm.
Ben Talarico (35) and Seamus Phillips (38) combined for a 70 run partnership that set up Rovers’ final score of 6/146.
Simon McCormack (2/22), Vitaly Leschen (1/17) and Kyle Rizzi (1/7) all picked up wickets for the Saints.
In under 14 cricket, Myrtleford has its work cut out against Rutherglen after losing wickets late on day one.
The Saints knocked the Redlegs over for 80, with Bailey Wyatt (3/5) and Michael Elliott (3/15) the chief destroyers.
Aleesha Kennedy had her best outing so far this season, picking up two wickets, while Lachlan Dale and Josh Morgan claimed a scalp each.
Despite such a strong performance with the ball, the Saints were unable to take full advantage, finishing the day at 3/21.
Thomas Piazza (9), Morgan (2) and Jedd Pryor (2) were all sent packing to leave the match on an even keel at the halfway mark.
Still, with the likes of Elliott, Jack Lunardi and Max Muscat still to come, Myrtleford will fancy its chances of adding the 60 runs it needs for victory this Saturday.
In the under 12 competition, Myrtleford is behind Milawa on runs, but well ahead in the wickets column.
The Saints are 4/47, while the Demons are 8/63.
Myrtleford will be looking to take its tally beyond 100 when the match resumes at Memorial Park, then hope to deliver the knockout blow with the ball.
Meanwhile Bright, still chasing its first win, was competitive against Bruck on day one.
The Wanderers struggled to contain Bruck’s batsmen, who put on a big total of 2/91.
But Bright’s batsmen ensured the match wouldn’t be a one sided affair by posting a tally of 4/64.
