Easternats rev up

SMOKING: Burn outs are a staple of Easternats entertainment.

Wangaratta expects to cash in on Winton’s 10 year deal

WANGARATTA’S economy is to be revved up, potentially by millions of dollars, on the back of a 10 year deal to host Easternats at Winton.

Jon Davison, founder and promoter of the iconic motoring event which is being relocated from Melbourne, told the Wangaratta Chronicle yesterday he expected between 10,000 to 15,000 visitors to attend the three day spectacular, from April 22 to 25 next year.

And he said Wangaratta and Benalla would gain millions of dollars into their economies.

"It’s not just accommodation, fuel, food and the likes from the event proper, but also ongoing and sustainable business, associated with people doing up their cars," Mr Davison said.

He expects up to 750 entries for Easternats - in show n shine, street drags and burnouts.

"Easternats is about allowing people to have fun with their cars, in a safe and organised environment," he said.

"This is not a tits and bums show...there are no wet t-shirt events, strippers or anything like that...we pride ourselves on offering family entertainment."

Winton Motor Raceway chief executive officer, Mick Ronke, was delighted with the coup and believed Easternats has potential to grow into the largest event in regional Victoria.

Both parties want to work closely with local councils to maximise tourism opportunities, and with police to run an orderly event.

Senior Sergeant Stuart Dunstan of Wangaratta police said it is likely additional officers will be called in from Melbourne to assist.
