No track problems

IT’S BACK: Racing returns to Wangaratta today for a mid-week meet.

Turf club boss says surface in super condition ahead of today’s meet

THE Wangaratta Turf Club’s track problems look to be a thing of the past with club chief exceutive officer Malcolm Hart saying the surface was in superb condition for today’s mid-week meet and that the rain last week had added the finishing touches.

Today’s meet will feature eight races from 1pm onwards and Hart said he expected plenty of local trainers to secure victories.

"We’ve got 18 horses from local trainers in the fields," he said.

"It’s not a bad meet, actually.

"I think the track will be very fair for all horses.

"Hopefully there will be success for the local trainers."

After the club’s last meet on January 4, the surface of the track copped criticism for its state, however, Hart said the work the head curator had been putting in had reaped rewards.

Hart added that the heavy downpour in Wangaratta on Thursday evening had been timed beautifully and said the club was working with Racing Victoria to upgrade its irrigation system.

"It’s been a very positive experience," he said.

"RVL are going to help us upgrade our irrigation system.

"It’s hard being a local club, the equipment is so expensive but RVL have been great.

"The weather is so extreme here so it’s hard with the water being tight but the track is terrific now.

"It’s panned out perfectly because the rain will even the track out and we may get a little sprinkle on Saturday and then a 34-degree day on Sunday will be good."
