A LOCAL man has been invited to Tasmania to partake in a momentous celebration of a historic event that took place in the Antarctic a century ago, taking with him a train of sled dogs.
Porepunkah’s Brett Hadden will board the Spirit of Tasmania with his 10 huskies next month to parade the animals in Hobart during the commemoration of the "Race to the Pole", an encounter between Norway and England that saw the unfortunate death of Robert Falcon Scott.
On March 11, Mr Hadden will steer his dogs from Elizabeth Pier Docks in Hobart and move through the streets passing the post office where Norway’s Roald Amundsen sent a telegram to the nation’s king, before finishing the parade at the hotel where he stayed that night.
Mr Hadden boasts a wealth of experience with the dogs and runs Australian Sleddog Tours out of Dinner Plain, which is rapidly growing.
He said this new adventure, where he gets to unveil his incredible dogs in a significant event, was an honor.
"Doing this in Tasmania is a dream for me, it represents the great Antarctic explorers and adventurers of the South Pole 100 years ago up to when they pulled them out in 1993," Mr Hadden said.
"We are going to re-enact that race and what he did, it’s hugely an honor."
Approached by organisers of the event, Mr Hadden has an all-expenses paid trip, including a long journey over on the boat, which he has some concerns about for the dogs.
"The Spirit of Tasmania will be an issue, getting on that without getting the dogs seasick and having to keep them in cages all night, but we’ll get there," Mr Hadden said.
