Myrtleford’s future looking brighter, after $80,000 raised at dinner

Written by SCOTT ANDERSON.

MYRTLEFORD Football and Netball Club is set to enter the 2009 season with a clean slate after its "debt demolition" dinner, held on Saturday night, raised around $80,000.

The Saints were operating at between $75,000 and $85,000 in the red, but the overwhelming community support has the club in a position few other sides can claim to be.

"We haven’t counted up the total figure yet, but it will be close to the mark," Myrtleford FNC president Bill O’Donohue said.

"We are probably now in a better position than we have been for a long time.

"We are not the only club in the red - just about every side is operating with a debt.

"But, thanks to the support of the community, we can pretty much wipe that off."

O’Donohue said the bulk of the pledges were made by average supporters, and admitted to being surprised by the amount of donations made.

"Everyone around town chipped in," he said.

"It was $1000 here, $2000 there - there were no stand out contributions, it was a real group effort.

"It was definitely a surprise to get as much as we did - we were hoping to raise probably three quarters of that amount, so it is a great result."
