THREE Beechworth community members have taken up the challenge to support ‘On the Beat against children’s cancer’ on Sunday.
Sergeant Geoff Still and Senior Constable Marty Beale from Beechworth police and Bret Lacey, operations manager from Beechworth Correctional Centre, will walk and ride their way from Beechworth to Wangaratta in the second leg of the event.
On the Beat began as an idea four months ago by Sergeant Adrian Keltie of Melbourne.
"I wanted to raise money and awareness of My Room, a charity which supports the Children’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Children’s Hospital," he said.
After putting out a call to Victorian police members to see who would walk the 400km from Wodonga to Melbourne, Sergeant Keltie had 16 members walking the entire distance plus many more walking the individual legs.
"The complete trek leaves from Wodonga and stops at Beechworth, Wangaratta, Benalla, Mansfield, Yea and Melbourne," Sergeant Still said.
"The first leg will finish in Beechworth on Saturday at the Police Paddocks."
Members of the community are invited to come along to help raise funds for this wonderful cause.
Mr Lacey said there would be a barbecue, kids’ rides and a plant sale through Prisoners on the Run.
"Once again Prisoners on the Run are pleased to support a worthwhile charity, and will be donating the sale of all plants to On the Beat," he said.
An outdoor setting has also been donated for a raffle.
Members of the Beechworth community are asked to drop into the police station to make a donation or can visit www.myroom.com.au.
Following a breakfast supplied by Beechworth Rotary, the crew will leave at 8am from the Beechworth Bakery on Sunday and will alternate walking and riding to Wangaratta stopping at Indigo Winery and Tarrawingee Hotel before arriving at Apex Park Wangaratta at 1pm.
