BRIGHT looks set for a place in the WDCA top four after defeating Whorouly/Gapsted, thanks to a six wicket haul from young speedster Michael Sullivan.
Sullivan tore through the Maroons’ line up with pace and swing, claiming opener Jeremy Haywood (4) early in the innings to get the Wanderers off to a dream start.
In the absence of opening bowler Mat Walsh, Reuben Jamieson was given the opportunity to get the ball swinging early and that he did, finding Glenn Cousins’ (3) edge.
Whorouly/Gapsted captain James Neary then joined opener Scott Jones at the crease for a long stint but the runs were still rather scarce.
Neary eventually began to get the scoreboard ticking over, but he was trapped in front of his stumps by Sullivan for 25, leaving the Maroons 3/62 just before afternoon tea.
Will Bursill was the next to strike in his first game for the season, having veteran Rod Newton caught behind for 15.
With the Maroons in desperate need for quick runs, Ron Elliot made his way to the crease to score a quick fire 25 before Sullivan struck again, having him out LBW.
Sullivan was in fine form with the ball, claiming another two quick scalps, which put the Maroons in a difficult position of still needing 84 runs with only three wickets in hand.
On the verge of a half century, Jones was still at the crease, leaving his side with a slim hope of victory.
Needing one run to bring up his 50, Jones tried to pull a Sullivan short ball but instead found the edge with the ball flying through to the keeper for Sullivan’s sixth wicket of the day.
Spinner Keiren Jamieson was able to clean up the tail just before the rain set in to leave the Wanderers with a 48 run victory.
The result saw Bright retain its spot inside the top four with Whorouly/Gapsted slipping down to sixth and in desperate need of a win this weekend against the second placed Wangaratta Magpies.
Meanwhile, Bright will be hoping to have a big win when it takes on bottom placed Greta on away soil.
The Wanderers will also take to the field in the one-day grand final on Sunday against ladder leader Milawa at the Milawa Recreation Reserve.
The match will be a McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps day fundraiser, similar to the successful Sydney Test.
A barbecue will be running throughout the day as well as a jumping castle for the kids, which will provide a great opportunity for families to make their way down to support the Wanderers.
