THE seemingly inevitable growth of the Ovens and King Football Netball League moved a step closer this week, with board members meeting with representatives from former Benalla and District league clubs Goorambat, Swanpool and Tatong on Monday night.

Having secured the necessary clearances, all three clubs are seeking acceptance to join the O and K for the 2010 season, with Goorambat and Swanpool almost certain to be admitted.

Tatong’s future as a stand alone club, however, appears clouded, with the Magpies needing to prove they are capable of becoming viable in the O and K.

The Magpies had a deplorable season in 2009, beaten by more than 200 points nine times in 15 matches, including a 318-point loss against eventual runner up Swanpool and a 275-point loss against third-place finisher Goorambat.

Tatong only came within 100 points of its opponent three times for the year, each time against fellow struggler Longwood, losing by 58 points in round four, 76 in round nine, and 70 in round 14.

But while the lack of strength in its playing list is a major issue, so is the lack of numbers.
