5-2 loss has Myrtleford confidence sinking fast

Written by ALEX BAIRD.

FOR the second consecutive week the Savoys were on the end of a brutal defeat, this time going down 5-2 at home against the Lavington Panthers.

The result showed the exact same score line as last week when Myrtleford went down to Albury United.

It’s not panic stations yet for the Savoys, who were aiming for the league championship at the start of the month.

Coach Rob Caponecchia said his side played well in patches, but still has to address some issues that are letting them down leading into the finals series, which is less than a month away.

"We could have been 2-0 up early on," he said.

"But their keeper made some great saves and then they got up on us.

"I think we are lacking a bit of concentration and that’s when we are conceding goals."

After the Panthers scored first, Myrtleford pegged a goal back through Paul Bonacci.

Only three minutes later Lavington was back in front through Kade Rixon, who scored his side’s first three goals of the match before halftime.

Taking a 3-1 lead into the break the Panthers soon made the deficit three goals, which ended the Savoys’ hopes of a draw.

Michael Sacco scored a consolation goal late in the game but it wasn’t to be the Savoys’ day.

Caponeccia said his side has looked a different outfit during a horror month but he still believes they can turn things around in time for the finals.

"The boys are a bit low on confidence at the moment," he said.

"There were periods in the game when we lost our discipline and at the moment things aren’t clicking during the games.

"It’s important we start gelling together again and cement a top five spot with our last couple of games and find some form.

"I still have a lot of belief in our group."

Caponecchia said the side would need to begin the resurgence starting this week against the lowly placed Albury Hotspurs, adding the side would be putting in extra training sessions heading into the finals campaign.

"We need to get back on the winners’ list against the Hotspurs who are below us," he said.

"We are going to start training on Saturdays now so our Melbourne players will get a chance to train together."
