Open day at Chiltern Primary

PARENTS whose children will be embarking on their first year of primary school in 2011 can view what Chiltern Primary School has to offer in learning opportunities and facilities.

The school, which has been steady around the 80 to 90 students mark over the last few years, has an open day on Wednesday, August 25 from 8.30am to 5pm.

"We’ll be running our normal program," principal Chris Sleep said of plans for the day.

"All the classrooms will be open and we’ll have tours when visitors come.

"We’re planning to use the house captains and myself to take people on tours of the school."

Ms Sleep said the open day was part of the transition program set up with the local pre-school.

"We do have extra days when pre-school children come along and we have them participate in planned activities, and we have parent information days."

It’s exciting times for the school on the building front.

"We’re part of round one of the Building Education Revolution and our project is gaining a new library facility.

"All of the foundations are being constructed at the moment.

"It’s going to have a 21st century feel about it.

"It will have up-to-date ICT facilities and be a wonderful learning space and an open plan space for classes.

"Also as part of the project, the current library will be upgraded and renovated into a new staffroom and lesson preparation area."

Chiltern Primary is also involved in implementation of the Ultranet, a new online learning system for schools being launched on Monday, August 9.

Students will be able to create their own online learning portfolio and take part in online learning activities and teachers can access and share online learning content across Victoria.

Ms Sleep said Chiltern Primary had much to offer students.

"I think the good thing about our school is the positive environment we have got here.

"I’m extremely proud of the teaching staff and the skills they’ve got and developed and the way they approach professional development, always looking at improving skills which can only help improve learning outcomes for students.

"The other thing I’m really proud of is the caring environment we have at the school.

"We have lots of support programs for the children.

"All the staff take responsibility for every child in the school."
