BIG DIFFERENCE: Beechworth’s Georgia McCormick fends off challenges from three Western Australian players.

A TRIO of Beechworth hockey players played a starring role in last month’s National Hockey Championships for Victoria.
Georgia McCormick and Jessie Lucas were part of the under 18 Victorian women’s team that competed in Newcastle while Michael Menzie joined the under 18 Victorian men’s side up in Brisbane.
The championships ran from April 10-21 and saw each side play seven preliminary matches against each state and territory from around Australia.
McCormick and Lucas were crucial to the women’s success as they helped the side to victories over NSW, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania.
In the quarter final they again beat NSW 2-1 and qualified for the grand final where they unfortunately went down to the strong Queensland side 6-1.
Menzie’s performance in defence for the men’s team was brilliant as they lost just one of the seven preliminary matches.
Victoria defeated Western Australia, Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and ACT to qualify for the finals.
A crushing 7-3 victory over Queensland in the quarter final saw Victoria proceed to the grand final against NSW.
After going down 4-2 in an earlier clash, NSW was again too good for Victoria, winning 5-3 despite Menzie’s best efforts.
